Time machine backup as wifi network

I have bought a new mac book and i want to access the time machine backup of my old mac that i have on a hard drive. I want to use that backup as a wifi network which is plugged in via USB to the Airport Extreme. How do I format the backup so that I can access the files from my new macbook?

Howdy Puzzled Again,

If you're looking to continue use of an external hard drive that contains Time Machine backups, the steps below detail how to get it set up correctly in AirPort Utility.

  1. Connect the drive to a USB port on your device, then make sure it's powered on.
  2. From AirPort Utility, select the device. Click Edit, then click the Disks tab.
  3. Select the disk from the Partitions list and select Enable File Sharing.
  4. Click Update.

Once connected and configured, see the links below for information on restoring data from the old Mac's Time Machine backups to your new Mac.

  • To restore everything in your Time Machine backup, use OS X Recovery.
  • To copy the files, settings, and OS X user accounts in your backup to another Mac, use Migration Assistant.
